Artist’s Bio

Daniel Powers is an emerging, award-winning photographer whose fine art photography has been winning first-place awards in juried photo competitions since 2001. Art collectors from as far as Turkey and Italy have purchased his works.

His style in black and white is immediately recognizable by its mood. Negative space is employed to create tension and stimulate a visceral – emotional – response in the viewer. Known for his contrasty images with deep, rich tones he conveys what he feels when looking through the lens onto the final printed photograph. “The value of photography as a medium lies in its ability to capture a moment of life – a feeling.”

He believes in the integrity of the photograph and the fidelity of film. With the exception of the dodging and burning that are so much a part of the art of black and white photography, the original image is preserved: nothing is added or taken out. The negatives of all closed-edition photographs are destroyed after printing the last in the series. The majority of his images are captured with Nikon cameras and lenses on 35 mm film because of its unequaled depth and exposure latitude and tonal range.

When not taking photographs he can be found chasing his two daughters around local playgrounds.
